Chinese Medicine – Lots of History

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Bart_Rutherford] Bart Rutherford Chinese medicine has only recently gained acceptance and prominence in Western society; however the treatment philosophy is more than 3000 years old. Traditional Chinese medicine is based on the principle that humans are a dynamic energy system, where mind and body are unified and balance each other. The underlying structures of Chinese medicine are the theories of yin-yang and the five elements. Both theories are used to explain the physiological and pathological changes of the human body in disease, as well as to guide clinical treatment. Yin-yang theory holds that all natural phenomena consist of two equal and opposing aspects, known as yin and yang. Stillness, darkness, degeneration and organic disease are viewed as characteristics of yin, whilst movement, hyperactivity and functional disease of the body epitomize yang. The theory is also used to explain the anatomical structure of the human body and its physiology function. Opposition of these forces manifest themselves in the body as hyper- or hypo-activity in particular organs and cause blockages of the vital life force, qi. The goal of Chinese medicine is to restore the natural flow of qi, which is theorized to run along invisible pathways known as meridians. Unblocking qi means that the balance between yin and yang is re-instated. A second important principle in Chinese medicine is the five elements theory, which is used to define the interaction between human physiology, pathology and the natural environment. Wood, fire, earth, metal and water are the five elements that the Chinese believe comprise the material world. Each of the organs of the body belongs to a particular element and has the characteristics of that element. For example, the liver and gall bladder are the zang-fu organs of wood. Eye sight is also associated with the wood element. Unlike Western medicine, Chinese medicine is a holistic treatment that considers the inter-relatedness of spirit and body in making a diagnosis and subsequent treatment. Your practitioner will ask questions about your emotional and mental health, which will assist in the physical diagnosis. The goal of therapy is to restore the balance of yin and yang, and allow your qi to flow unimpeded. Chinese medical practitioners use a number of techniques to achieve this goal, including acupuncture, moxibustion, herbal remedies and deep tissue massage. Acupuncture is a very common Chinese medicine therapy. It involves inserting very fine, small needles along your meridians to redirect or restore the flow of vital energy in your body. Moxibustion is a technique where small amounts the herb mugwort are applied to affected areas of your body in order to re-energize hypo-active organs. Cupping is also used to stimulate blood flow in the deep musculature of the body. During the treatment, glass cups are placed onto the skin and the air in the cup is sucked out, creating a vacuum. Herbs are also a crucial part of Chinese medicine; your practitioner will prescribe herbs designed to correct the imbalances seen to be causing your physical condition. You may need to brew the herbs as a tea or infusion, or you may take the herbs as an extract or in a pill. The efficacy of many aspects of Chinese medicine has not been confirmed by scientific studies, however many people the world over celebrate good health as the result of this holistic, ancient treatment system. Airline Dispatcher Job Sites

By Matthew Keegan In several related articles I made mention of finding work as a flight coordinator, as a flight attendant, or as a pilot. Each specialty, as you can imagine, has its own requirements, hence the job sites that feature these types of opportunities are not always the same. If you have some idea where to look besides contacting an employer directly you can narrow down your searches and, hopefully, shorten the entire job hunting process. The following list contains some of the sites that are most helpful in listing viable opportunities for airline dispatchers. Aviation Employment Board This site offers free registration and allows for you to post your resume for free as well. Airlines featured include United, Continental, Trans States, Spirit, Southwest, Northwest, Mesa, EOS, Champion, Pace, and a host of others including many European and Asian carriers. Please visit www.aviationemploymentboard.net for more detailed information. Monster Monster regularly lists over 800,000 opportunities, including many airline openings. There is no charge to register and you are permitted to list your resume for free as well. Please visit www.monster.com for more information. Avianation One of the largest aviation related job sites online, Avianation features a variety of opportunities, including many dispatcher positions. There is a fee involved for their service, currently set at $9.95 per month or $80.55 annually. Occasionally, posted specials drop the price considerably so visit this site for current information: www.avianation.com today. Air Jobs Daily As one of the leading job posting sites for the aviation industry online, Air Jobs Daily features a variety of opportunities for business and commercial aviation employees. Air Jobs Daily charges an annual fee of $77.95 which also includes a subscription to the Air Jobs Digest, a periodical featuring additional job listings and aviation related information. Please visit www.airjobsdaily.com for more information. Hot Jobs Hot Jobs, owned by search engine giant Yahoo, is an employment site featuring several hundred thousand opportunities, including airline jobs. Registration is free and you may list your resume for free too. Please stop by www.hotjobs.com for more information. Career Builder The largest job posting site online is Career Builder which at any given time lists more than one million jobs. Airline jobs, such as flight dispatchers are listed, perhaps not in as abundance as some of the aviation sites, but a good place to look nevertheless. Membership is free and you can list your resume for no charge too. Visit www.careerbuilder.com for all the details. Other sites that feature airline dispatcher opportunities include: AEPS, Plane Jobs, Jet Jobs , and Skyjobs. Please note that most of the paid sites contain the same job opportunities as each of the other sites, therefore belonging to more than one is not cost effective. Asset Finder Alert

By Thomas Tuke There are many private Asset Recovery companies and Professional Tracers that will offer to help you recover your abandoned or lost property. Some of these firms will try to charge you a 20-35% contingency fee for the recovery of the lost asset. Do your homework. In addition to regularly checking in our databases, check all old financial records including brokerage statements and tax returns. Pay special attention to securities with dividend reinvestment plans of companies that have gone through a merger or acquisition. Asset Finders or Tracers specialize in Pre-escheat securities, Court funds and unredeemed government checks. They obtain these records from cooperating Companies as Holders, Transfer Agents and by searching Court records before the asset is scheduled to be transferred (or escheated) to the appropriate custodian Government agency. This way the Finder or Tracer can avoid both any licensing requirement and the finder fee cap imposed by most States Unclaimed Property Statutes ie) 10% once the property reaches the government for safekeeping. In other words, if contacted by a Tracer you can be certain the asset is likely approaching the end of its dormancy period and will be transferred (escheated) over within the next 6-9 months or less. If you can wait you may be able to locate the unclaimed asset yourself in the only National online database for unclaimed assets US Unclaimed Money. If situation warrants that you dont wish to wait and need the funds now, try to negotiate a lower fee. Remember, that once the asset is transferred to a Government agency and you still cannot locate it, the Tracers fee is likely to be capped at 10%. NOTE: If the Tracer cannot give you the exact value of the unclaimed asset, that likely confirms it is a security of some sort. If you decide to employ his services, you may wish to pay him the fee directly without the Tracer selling the security and taking his fee from the sale proceeds. In addition, one should carefully evaluate the decision to sell the security at all. For if the security t has appreciated significantly, you could be liable for payment of capital gains tax so check with your accountant Some companies, particularly those that deal with securities, will offer to liquidate the asset and deduct their fees from the proceeds. One should carefully evaluate the decision to sell stock, however. If it has appreciated significantly, you could be liable for payment of capital gains tax – check with your accountant One must also remember that most States will eventually sell a security that is transferred to them and credit the owners account with the proceeds. So if the abandoned security is transferred to a State agency and one waits too long, an unclaimed security will be sold thus creating possible tax consequences and foregoing any appreciation and future dividends. Also keep in mind one may have to search in many States for your unclaimed property. Per a 1995 Supreme Court ruling Texas vs New Jersey, if the address of the owner of the unclaimed property is unknown or a foreign country then the property is transferred to the State in which the holder is incorporated. Start with States such as Connecticut, Delaware and Illinois that are headquarters for many large publicly traded and financial service companies. To check all possible Government agencies try the only National online database at US Unclaimed Money It is often possible to locate the name of a lost asset by going through old financial documents, including brokerage statements and tax returns. Be especially mindful of securities with dividend reinvestment plans, and for those companies you have owned that have merged or spun-off shares within the preceding five years. Mutual funds often conduct their own transfer operations in-house. Contact all mutual funds you have ever owned, regardless of whether they’ve been sold or not. You may be entitled to unpaid dividends or distributions that were payable before the shares were disposed of. If your search fails to turn up the asset, you may want to try to negotiate a lower fee with the Asset Finder or Tracer. If they know you have the information or resources available to you to eventually locate the asset yourself, they are much more inclined to entertain a lower fee. And the closer it gets to the end of the dormancy period, the more motivated the Finder or Tracer will become. Even with the above information and access to the Internets largest unclaimed property database of more than 50 million records, .if you are still unable to locate the asset and are in need of special assistance, please contact us at US-Unclaimed Money. Our staff has years of expertise in locating hard to find lost assets. Sites such as http://www.US-UnclaimedMoney.com, http://www.Unclaimed-Databases.com and http://www.Asset-Recovery-Service.com are divisions of American Refund Services Inc. As the Internets premier sites for unclaimed assets and property, their goal is to assist the millions of citizens to locate and to claim their lost money without paying exorbitant finder fees. Christmas Stocking Sock Monkeys

By S. Roberts Year after year does Santa Claus bring you socks? They might be a great gift for Santa in Lapland but on the whole they are a pretty unimaginative stocking filler. Well we have a fantastic idea to turn a boring old pair of socks into a cute, cheeky, little sock monkey. All you will need is… A pair of socks in any size, needle and thread, toy stuffing, 2 buttons for eyes and a sewing machine is an advantage but not essential Take the first sock, turn it inside out and lay it out flat heel up. Mark out the centre of the sock up to 4 cm below the heel line. With a dewing machine, if you have one, stitch 1 cm away from the centre line and sew down towards the ribbed part of the sock. Sew down to the bottom edge, turn away from the centre line and sew across the ribbed section to form a foot. Stitch the other side of the centre line to match. Now cut up the centre line to divide the legs. Turn the sock the right way out through the hole at the monkey’s crotch. Lightly stuff the monkey’s body and legs and sew up the hole in the crotch with invisible stitches. Lay the second sock out flat in a side profile position and cut out relevant parts as indicated in the diagram. Tail Fold in half and stitch up the long side, tapering the ribbed edge to a point. Turn, stuff, turn the ends in and attach to the monkey’s bottom. Mouth Turn in edges and pin the oval shaped mouth to the main monkey just below the toe. Stitch invisibly in place leaving a small opening. Lightly stuff and close opening. Embroider on a mouth. Arms Fold in half and sew up the long edge and across the ribbed edge. Turn, stuff, turn the edges in and stitch in place on the monkey’s body. Ears Put two ear parts together with right sides facing. Sew around curved part of the ear and turn right sides out. Tuck the bottom edge up inside the ear and fold the ear in half. Tack half way along the bottom edge to form a fold in the ear and stitch in place at the side of the monkey’s head. Eyes Stitch buttons on the front of the monkey’s head above the mouth. Pull the hat on to the monkey’s head For illustrations and photos see www.santaspostbag.co.uk/how-to-make-sock-monkeys-christmas-toy.html S. Use Maps, Phamplets, Tickets, and More in Your Scrapbook Layouts!

By Cheri Moseley A picture might say a 1,000 words, but those words are pretty important on their own! What I am trying to say is, pictures are not the only things that hold a memory or tell the story. On your vacation trips – look out for things that will make you remember WHERE you were and WHY!!! In my Vacation Album scrapbook I used “road” sticker strips. Looks just like a road and I put a little stretch on each page. This continues on each page and just offers “continuation” from page to page in your album. I used the map of the area I went. This is especially good for places like National Parks or a specific location. I did a scrapbook layout from California to Texas – and used the map highlighting the trip on Interstate 10 East! That is what I used as the “background” paper! The actual map!! And I made other little markings for things on the way that I want to remember. This way, the map as the “background paper” not only offers the theme of “travel” but also offers memories! It cuts down on cost and thickness of the layout. If you dont have the actual map or it isn’t in usable condition – scan it and print it out! In addition, you can use admission tickets and phamplets that you might get at a destination. I did a 12×12 , 2 page spread, and has 5 photos of my 2 kids at different ages when we went to Disneyland, so it is entitled “Disneyland Through the Years”. It has admission tickets showing the price of admission and the parking ticket to see how much we had to pay to park! Admission is about $52 to Disneyland this year – in 1999 it was only $36! Remember that?! This idea would work for any place you might go. The phamplet that they hand out as you walk in makes for the perfect background! The perfect memory holder! I just cut out the map of the park and it shows the whole park with all the rides – and we always look to find our favorites. Look out for other things that hold memories! You can also collect food receipts from when you buy food items indiginous to the place you are at. Gas receipts, souviner tags, the label from the popcorn box or even a pebble from a walkway! There is so much that you can find that will offer you memories. Don’t just rely on photos. They are great and do their part, but other momentos are just as great. I have this article with photos to show you how these items are used, if you’d like to see them see my signature line for the link. Aleve, Vioxx, Celebrex, and Bextra: What You Need To Know About Arthritis Pain Medications

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=R.L._Fielding] R.L. Fielding Recent controversy about the safety of pain medications for arthritis has left patients and health care professionals alike confused about which medications are safe to use. In fact, a recent survey by the Boston-based Rippe Lifestyle Institute indicated that many people with arthritis are suffering unnecessarily because they have stopped or reduced their use of pain relievers due to confusion about which drugs are considered safe. The survey also showed that now, more than ever, those with arthritis need to understand the benefits and possible side effects associated with all arthritis pain medications. In order to do so, people with arthritis, their caregivers and families must be familiar with recent news about the two types of drugs most commonly used to treat arthritis pain non-selective, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and another group of NSAIDs known as cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) specific inhibitors. COX-2 specific inhibitors vs. Other NSAIDs COX-2 specific inhibitors are the newest members of the NSAID class of medications. Available by prescription only, they became widely used in recent years to reduce joint pain and swelling. COX-2 specific inhibitors work by selectively blocking, or inhibiting, one of the two enzymes associated with inflammation. Some experts think that this selective inhibition may be one reason for some of the negative side effects currently associated with COX-2 specific inhibitors. Non-selective NSAIDs were developed earlier than COX-2 specific inhibitors and have been widely used to relieve arthritis pain and inflammation for many years. Unlike COX-2 specific inhibitors, non-selective NSAIDs inhibit both major enzymes involved in the inflammatory process, COX-1 and COX-2. The non-selective NSAID category includes a number of different medications that are available in both prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) products. Timeline of Events To understand the current state of affairs, it is important to understand the sequence of events. The controversy started when a study published in the October 21, 2004, issue of the New England Journal of Medicine cited the COX-2 specific inhibitor, Vioxx as potentially causing major adverse events, including heart attack and stroke, among patients taking the drug. As a result, Merck (the drugs manufacturer) voluntarily withdrew Vioxx from the market. However, in the months following, the safety of the other available COX-2 specific inhibitors such as Celebrex and Bextra, as well as other arthritis pain medications in the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) class, were also called into question. Consequently, in February 2005, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) convened a special Advisory Committee, made up of members of the Arthritis and Drug Safety Advisory Committees, to review the cardiovascular safety of these arthritis pain medications. FDA Directive: Stronger Warning Labels for Some Pain Medications On April 7, 2005, taking into account the recommendations of the Advisory Committee, the FDA issued the following directives: Bextra, a COX-2 specific inhibitor manufactured by Pfizer, was withdrawn from the market. All prescription NSAIDs must revise their labeling to include a black box warning that highlights the potential increased risk for cardiovascular (CV) events as well as the potentially life threatening gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding associated with these drugs. Celebrex, the only COX-2 specific inhibitor remaining on the US market, was included in this directive. All OTC NSAIDs (except aspirin) will be required to revise their labeling to include more specific information about the potential for GI and CV side effects, a stronger reminder to follow label instructions, as well as a warning about potential skin reactions. To further evaluate the potential for increased CV risk, the FDA also announced that all NSAIDs must conduct and submit to the FDA a comprehensive review and analysis of pertinent safety data from clinical trials. Aleve (naproxen sodium) is supported by clinical studies conducted to gain approval of naproxen as a prescription product and as OTC that do not provide any evidence of increased risk of cardiovascular events. Treatment Options: What Should Arthritis Patients Know? For some people who suffer from pain associated with arthritis, their symptoms can be managed with exercise, heat/cold therapy, joint protection, assistive devices, weight control, or in some severe cases, surgery. For others, medications are needed to help manage the symptoms associated with arthritis. When taken as directed OTC medications such as Aleve provide a safe and effective way to treat mild to moderate pain of minor arthritis. If patients have questions, they should consult their health care professional about which treatment option is most appropriate. Why Its Important to Treat Arthritis Arthritis affects approximately 66 million Americans and is the nations leading cause of disability. There are over 100 different types of arthritis, and they all have different symptoms that vary in severity from person to person. The most common form of arthritis, osteoarthritis, is characterized by the breakdown of cartilage that causes the bones to rub together, resulting in pain, loss of movements and stiffness. Arthritis is usually a chronic condition. For more information on Aleve and naproxen, visit the Aleve website at [http://www.aleve.com] www.aleve.com. New Year’s Resolutions – 4 Steps to Success

By Meri Raffetto For many of us who want to start living a healthier lifestyle, the hardest part is getting started. We often set our New Years Resolution only to forget it a few weeks later. The first and most important step to succeeding at your new resolution is setting attainable goals. Here are four steps to create goals to help you make your New Years Resolutions a reality. 1. Measurable Goals One of the reasons people tend to lose interest in their New Years resolution is because they are too vague. Many people vow this is the year they will get in shape, lose weight, or improve their health. These goals are great but there is no way to evaluate the specifics. Instead you could make a resolution to lose weight by walking 3 days a week, and cutting down your portion sizes. This creates a clear picture of how you are going to achieve your new resolution and helps you to take action. 2. Practical Goals When creating a goal they must be practical which will depend entirely on your lifestyle. For example, if your day is scheduled around traveling from place to place and you typically depend on fast food, then setting a goal of bringing a lunch may not be practical. Instead you can make a goal to have a deli sandwich and salad instead of fast food 3 days a week. 3. Accept setbacks Setbacks are a necessary part of the learning experience. Setting goals generally means changing habits which takes a bit of a learning curve. Setbacks are a natural part of the process and they dont mean that you have no will power or have failed. It means you are learning- accept them and move on! 4. Pamper Yourself Learn how to reward your positive efforts in a healthy way. Enjoy a massage, pedicure, afternoon matinee or hot bath. Its up to you but make sure to reward yourself to keep up a positive momentum. Rewarding yourself without food also helps to lessen the urge to eat for emotional reasons. Be nice to yourself! It goes a long way in reaching your goals and improves your well-being. 2005, Meri Raffetto Owner of Real Living Nutrition Services, Meri Raffetto is a recognized professional in the area of nutrition and wellness. Beautiful Fresh Flowers Unders $30

By Gerry Lewis A trip to the florist may brighten the day of the recipient, but may empty your pocket book. How can you avoid being taken to the cleaners on your next trip to the florist? One factor that affects the price of a floral arrangement is its large variety of flowers. Some flowers are so exotic or difficult to grow that they simply come with a high price tag. Less expensive flowers can be very effective, however, and should not be overlooked as an option. One of the common florist choices that costs less is the carnation. In some cases, you can get twenty long stemmed carnations without a vase (as a flower bouquet) for under $30. Daisies are another of the less expensive florist choices and bring a spot of happy sunshine into a room. Proper care of flower arrangements, both at the florist and in the delivery vehicle, will help you get the best value from your floral dollars. The first rule of cut flower care is to keep them refrigerated until they are to be used. The bouquet will not be as long lasting if it has been allowed to stand at room temperature for a great deal of time, such as at a roadside stand, before you get them. For the bouquet’s trip to the vase, make certain you remove the leaves that would be under the level of the water. The leaves will decay if left on, and your whole bouquet will take on an unpleasant odor. Along the same line, change the water if it starts to look a little cloudy. Lukewarm water is best, and be sure to use the floral food included with the bouquet, it can be purchased for less than a dollar at the florist if not included with your arrangement. Stems should be cut at an angle to allow for them to be able to ‘drink’ best. Trimming the bottom inch of stem every day or two will also help your arrangements last longer. Choosing individual blossoms to arrange yourself is a way to save money at the florist shop. The Peruvian Lily(aelstroemeria) is long-lasting and available in a variety of bright colors, including oranges, pinks, and reds, but only costs about two dollars each. Cut tulips, a classic favorite, run about two dollars and fifty cents per long-stemmed bloom. Another way to save at the florist shop is to ask about flowers that are starting to get a little bit old. In many cases a florist will discount these, and they will still give a few days of delight for a small price. This might be a way to enjoy one of the more exotic (read “expensive!) flowers for a few days. For home decor, there are two inexpensive options. One is to grow your own flowering potted plants, and the other is to gather wildflower bouquets. These options save on costs at the florist. (In fact, fire the florist!) Of the flowering plants, African violets are well-known and consistent pleasers. They seem to thrive on neglect; blossoming out in multiple blooms when you least expect it. Some are so sparkly they glisten like sugar-coated candies. Others have a delicate white ruffle outlining each petal. Don’t miss these beauties. Wildflower bouquets are very popular in country decorating. At certain times of year, daisies and various sunflowers can be found blanketing the countryside. Be sure to have the landowner’s permission, or that the flowers are legal to pick before you make your own bouquet (There are endangered and protected varieties, just like animals!). Be your own florist by arranging these natural wonders in antique pitchers, old buckets, canning jars, or other country-style containers. College Weight Gain

By Diana Keuilian Students today are faced with the serious reality of unwanted weight gain as they enter college. A recent study by Cornell University found that on average, college freshman gain about 0.5 pounds a week. This is almost 11 times more than the average weight gain among 17-and 18-year olds and almost 20 times more than the average weight gain among American adults! In the face of such staggering statistics two obvious questions arise: 1) Why are college students gaining weight at such an alarming rate? and 2) How can college weight gain be avoided? Q: Why are college students gaining weight at such an alarming rate? A: There are many different specifics that lead the student to gain weight in college, but they can be summed up into three main categories. 1. Increase in Calories College life encourages an increase in the caloric intake of students. College is filled with social events and social events usually equal FOOD! Most college cafeterias serve their food buffet style, and when given access to unlimited amounts of food most people automatically overeat. Fast food, while laden with calories, is cheap so it appeals to the budget of a college student. Studying for long hours often leads to snacking for hours. Blended coffee drinks and smoothies are often staples in a college students diet even though these items often pack more calories than a regular meal. 2. Decrease in Activity When students enter college most of them leave organized sports behind them. These students that were used to practicing five or more times a week for hours at a time are now left with no accountability to be active. Couple this with the hectic schedule that most college students deal with, and it begins to make sense why most incoming freshmen dont even make time to find the campus gym, let alone visit it regularly! 3. Metabolism Killers College students are notorious for crashing their metabolism by poorly managing their diets. This occurs when a student eats too few meals, and ends up eating extra large meals once or twice a day instead of proportioned meals throughout the day. A common metabolism killer of college students is skipping breakfast, the most important meal of the day as it starts ones metabolism up in the morning. Eating late at night is another classic metabolism killer of college students. Q: How can college weight gain be avoided?
